Director Nikyatu Jusu is developing a new movie that takes place within The Fly universe. Deadline reports that the film is not a remake of the 1986 David Cronenberg film or the Kurt Neumann 1958 original, but an original work created by Jusu herself. No plot details have been released at this time.
Jusu is an up-and-coming director whose 2022 film The Nanny got positive feedback both in the festival circuit and the mainstream. She is currently working on a sequel to Night of the Living Dead and a project produced by Jordan Peele.
The 1958 original remains a cult classic as does Cronenberg’s. Both had their shocking moments. In the original, starring Vincent Price, it was the “spider web” scene at the end, while in Cronenberg’s it was his use of practical effects throughout the movie depicting Jeff Goldblum’s gooey transition into the insect.
With the increasing amount of horror movies using practical effects, a Fly-based movie might be coming at an opportune time. Demi Moore’s gross-out film The Substance, now available on digital, held its own at the box office, with some calling it the best horror film they have seen in years.
Still, Jusu can’t go into this without knowing how beloved the Cronenberg classic is to fans. It’s one of those films that doesn’t need a remake since the original still holds up. But a fresh chapter within that world is welcome news as it has been almost 40 years since we visited it last.
In 1989 Chris Walas tried to make a direct sequel (The Fly II), but it failed to capture the magic of Cronenburg’s original and is mostly ignored in that timeline.
This project is in development for 20th Century Fox Studios.
