The Last of Us is one of those HBO projects that a lot of fans cannot wait for. The series that follows the events of the post apocalyptic game are well underway and has now found its pilot episode director. Showrunner Craig Mazin the dude behind the terrifying and sobering Chernobyl will over see the series as a whole along with game creator Neil Druckman.
Kantemir Balagov, director behind Beanpole and Closeness has been tapped to direct the pilot episode of The Last of Us. Both Closeness and Beanpole were highly regarded with Closeness premiering at Cannes in 2017.
“The story takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.”
I was hoping that the series would take place in this world but tell the story of someone else. Gamers are already familar with the events of Joel and Ellie. It’s a shame that the series will limit itself to a story that has already been told.
