Simon McQuoid’s ‘Mortal Kombat’ Strikes Hard with First-Look Images

Fans of Mortal Kombat get ready. The brand new film, spear-headed by Simon McQuoid, is expected to release this year. In anticipation of that, the production released first-look photos from the film today, and from what we’re seeing, this could be one hell of a ride.

Based on the video games which rose to popularity in the early 90s that launched a previous franchise of films, the new movie will go even farther back in time, at least in its first ten minutes. According to Entertainment Weekly, who posted the images this morning, Mortal Kombat will open in feudal Japan taking fans back to the beginning of the story’s central conflict.

From there we flash forward to the present where we meet a newly introduced character, Cole Young (Lewis Tan, Into the Badlands), a man who has no idea he is part of that original feud’s legacy, nor what part he has to play in it.

Tan stars alongside  Joe Taslim (The Night Comes for Us) and Hiroyuki Sanada (The Avengers: Endgame) as well as Mehcad Brooks (Supergirl), Josh Lawson (Superstore), and Jessica McNamee (The Meg).

The film certainly has the potential to excite fans, especially with McQuoid going out on a limb telling the publication, “it’s definitely not gonna get a PG-13 rating.”

In fact, the director went further saying that he was pushing into R-rating territory while trying to not cross into the NC-17 region. Is he baiting the audience? Maybe, but it also seems to be working. Buzz is already high for the new film.

Mortal Kombat is produced by James Wan (InsidiousSawThe Conjuring).
