The folks over at Bloody Disgusting have reported that the character of Helen Lyle will return for the Jordan Peele-produced “spiritual sequel” to the 1992 classic tale of urban legend terror, Candyman.

According to BD, Candyman‘s urban legend-loving grad student and protagonist Helen Lyle will be one of the main catalysts of the new film. It’s said that director Nia DaCosta’s Candyman will take place following the events of the first film, so — given its dramatic conclusion — it could be theorized that Helen might return with a bit of a legendary edge.

(That said, we still know very little about DaCosta’s film, so, naturally, you can take that with several grains of salt.)

It’s recently been revealed that Tony Todd will also return for Candyman (reportedly reprising his role). While it’s unknown if Helen Lyle originator Virginia Madsen will make an appearance, we do know that the character herself will be played by Cassie Kramer.

Reportedly, Candyman will return to a now-gentrified section of Chicago that used to serve as the Cabrini-Green housing projects (which played host to the legend of the Candyman in the first film).

Again, we know very little about Candyman — so feel free to speculate — but every bit of news that does come out just seems to solidify the horror community’s collective excitement for its release on June 12, 2020.

Candyman — which began filming in August — was co-written by Peele and stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman) along with Cassie Kramer. It was initially rumored that Abdul-Mateen would be filling the role of the titular legend, however, with the recent news about Tony Todd’s reprisal (and a vague statement from DaCosta that Abdul-Mateen would not be replacing Todd), it’s uncertain what this means for the character.
