October Movie Marathon: Grab Bag

Why Grab Bag Week? While we’ve already shared haunted house movies, slasher movies and 80s movies, this week is for films that may not fit neatly into those categories. Maybe they’re extras from other categories, or maybe they’re just weird. Think of it as reaching into your candy bag on Halloween night. Who knows what kind of treat you may find.

21. House on Haunted Hill (1959)

Vincent Price is in full sass mode in this darkly funny tale of murder and macabre. A fun one to watch with a group, especially with Price and Carol Ohmart’s chemistry as the couple that hates each other. Absolute classic. -Jonathan Correia

22. Rubber

Let’s get this grab bag ripped open with “Rubber.” This weird little flick is about a tire that rolls around killing people. Yes, you read that correctly. Recently thrust into the spotlight by a tweet from Wilford Brimley that said it was one of the worst movies he had ever seen. How is that not a ringing endorsement?!? -James Jay Edwards

Ghost Stories, October Movie Marathon

Altitude Film Entertainment / Warp Films / Catalyst Global Media / Screen Yorkshire

23. Ghost Stories

What a fun, spooky British movie. Starring Andy Nyman, Alex Lawther, Paul Whitehouse and a shape-shifting Martin Freeman, “Ghost Stories” is an anthology tale of a skeptic trying to debunk the supernatural in the vein of “The X-Files,” with a twist ending that will leave you saying, “Are they allowed to do that?” -Brianna Spieldenner

Snoot Entertainment

24. The Devil’s Candy

Sean Byrne’s follow up to “The Loved Ones” (also 100 percent worth a watch) is the sun-scorched heavy metal family tale of “The Devil’s Candy.” Starring Ethan Embry (who has completely transformed for the role, and goodness gracious he looks great), the film’s nature is part possession, part dedicated serial killer and all awesome. -Kelly McNeely

25. The Night Comes for Us

This Indonesian martial arts film is a hardcore, ultra-violent, action-packed horror delight. Did I get you with that description? Well, it’s a bloody good spectacle that you don’t want to miss. -Glenn Packard

Catch 23 Entertainment / Killer Films / John Wells Productions

26. One Hour Photo

Think you know Robin Williams? Think again. This creepy flick stars Williams as a photo processing technician who gets obsessed with one of the families whose pictures he develops. Things turn stalker-level really fast. This is one of those movies that makes you feel dirty, because it could really happen (and probably has). -James Jay Edwards

Scene from The Canal

Park Films / Treasure Entertainment / Western Edge Pictures

27. The Canal

This horrifying movie has remained basically unknown, despite being a pretty darn good movie, and a scary one at that. This film shows the psychological effects on a man who discovers his wife has been cheating on him, while also finding footage showing multiple murders happening in his house in the early 1900s. Even better, its shocking scares and deeply depressing tone make it one of the most genuinely scary films out there. -Brianna Spieldenner
