Say what you will about Ryan Murphy’s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, but you cannot deny it is compelling television. So compelling that new evidence in the case might give the murderous brothers a chance at freedom.
The next installment in the Monsters series will focus on serial killer Ed Gein, the “Butcher of Plainfield,” who admitted to killing two people, but some believe he is responsible for many more. Charlie Hunnam has been cast as the “monster” in the upcoming series, and yesterday Netflix announced that Scream 2’s Laurie Metcalf has joined the series as Gein’s mother, Augusta.
Furthermore, Tom Hollander will portray Alfred Hitchcock and Olivia Williams as Alma Hitchcock. Psycho (1960), directed by Hitchcock, is a loose adaptation of Gein’s story.
Metcalf is an Emmy and Tony award-winning actress. She is probably most remembered for her role as Roseanne’s younger sister, Jackie, in the 80s sitcom Roseanne. However, she made a surprising turn cinematically as reporter Debbie Salt in 1997’s Scream 2.
No word yet on when the third installment of Monsters will premiere on Netflix and no other casting news has been announced at this time.
