‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Getting a Bonafide Sequel With Legacy Leads

With all of the 90’s reboot rigamarole happening in horror cinema these days, it might be no surprise that a beloved thriller is finally getting the direct sequel it deserves.

The 1997 slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer is one of those guilty pleasures that sticks with you just long enough for you to want to watch it again every so often, and now it looks like it is getting another chapter. Moreover, its two leads, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr, are in talks to reprise their roles.

Director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) is reportedly taking the helm on this one.

Although nothing can be confirmed yet, Deadline is reporting that Neal H. Moritz might return as producer, with Leah McKendrick doing the screenplay. Scream writer Kevin Williamson penned the first movie.

Sony has yet to confirm any details about the project.

Amazon tried its hand at an original series adaptation, but sadly their attempt ended in failure after just one season.

In the original, a group of friends is sworn to secrecy after a hit-and-run in which they accidentally strike someone stumbling onto a desolate coastal road. They manage to keep their secret for years until one by one they become victims to a hook-wielding madman who may or may not know what they did.

A failed 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer starred Hewitt and Prinze Jr. and then an unrelated third movie, I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer (2006) was released with little to no accolades.

Deadline also reports that this new film, much like its Scream cousin, will see legacy characters introduced to new ones in this latest chapter.

We will keep you posted as this story develops.
