The line up for Two Evil Eyes is the avengers of lineups. You have George Romero, Dario Argento together to work on their story in this magnificent anthology. Those two names alone are enough to swoon over. Then you have to factor in that both of these masters of horror are adapting the works of Edgar Allan Poe for their stories. I mean?!
I remember being in 8th grade and discovering that this film existed and I losing my damn mind. Here I was this Romero and Argento fanatic, watching Dawn of the Dead and Suspiria on repeat every weekend, and then comes this film that brings the guys together with the supportive Elmer’s glue of Edgar Allan Poe? Brilliant.
As if the trinity of horror goods at work here wasn’t enough, you have Tom Savini unloading with both barrels of make-up effects. Two Evil Eyes feels like Savini having a straight up creative blast. The gore is excellent.
The Two Evil Eyes synopsis goes like this:
George Romero and Dario Argento – bring you an unprecedented pair of shockers inspired by the tales of Edgar Allan Poe. In Romero’s The Facts In The Case Of Mr. Valdemar, a conniving wife (Adrienne Barbeau of THE FOG) and her lover use a hypnotic trance to embezzle a fortune from her dying husband, only to receive some chilling surprises from beyond the grave. Then in Argento’s The Black Cat, a deranged crime scene photographer (Harvey Keitelof FROM DUSK TILL DAWN) is driven to brutal acts of madness and murder by his girlfriend’s new pet. But will this cunning feline deliver a final sickening twist of its own?
