Dawn of the Discs gave us some very good news last week. The 80’s cult classic, Howard the Duck is coming to 4K UHD. The film, produced by George Lucas and directed by Willard Huyck is a very strange one. However it wasn’t a film that was out of place in the 80s along side others like Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, The Garbage Pail Kids and Gremlins.
The synopsis for Howard the Duck goes like this:
A sarcastic humanoid duck is pulled from his homeworld to Earth where he must stop an alien invasion with the help of a nerdy scientist and a struggling female rock singer.
Howard the Duck first appeared in Marvel comics back in December of 1973 in Adventure Into Fear #19. Howard wasn’t sarcastic and hip in his original iteration. Instead, he was a brash, pissed-off character surrounded by humans against his will. Creator, Steve Gerber even wrote Howard to be a bit of a portrait of existentialism at its core as well.
The film was a lot more fun and carefree. The thing people really remember about it is that the duck and Lea Thompson have a bit of a love affair in the film. Hey, it’s a strange film without a doubt, but I personally love it. I watched the heck out of this thing as a kid. I’m certain there is a whole generation of folks my age that had the same relationship with the film that I had with it. My VCR ended up eating the VHS alive, out of its sheer patience having run out with the many re-watches.
No other details were announced – past the news that the 4k UHD release will come out in July. We are hoping that this one will come with some much needed special features to go along with that beautiful new picture quality.
