Demon Slayer Takes the Lead Over Mortal Kombat at Box Office; Films Drop From Last Weekend

Demon Slayer was undoubtedly going to be a box office contender considering that it was number one with a bullet in Asia since last October. While, Mortal Kombat took a major lead over Demon Slayer in their opening weekends last week it MK wasn’t as lucky in its second week. Demon Slayer managed to take a signifcant enough lead to push Mortal Kombat into second place.

Much like opening weekend, Mortal Kombat took the lead by a small margin. This week, Demon Slayer made $6.4 million with Mortal Kombat trailing with $6.2 million. Sadly, both films fell off a tremendous -73%. A huge and unexpected drop for both films. A drop that analysts are still trying to figure out. The consensus at the moment is that the niche audience that came out last weekend already saw Demon Slayer and Mortal Kombat, leaving significantly less people going this weekend.

There is also the fact that, Mortal Kombat is currently on HBO Max and free for subscribers. On top of that theaters are still limited in spaced out seating arrangements. Both Mortal Kombat and Demon Slayer would see much larger returns if more theaters were open as well. All that contributing to the strange box office patterns we are all witnessing.
