It still hurts us every single day that Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal was cancelled. It’s been five whole years since it left our lives and to this day it feels like a death in the family. We would love to see it come back. It might be because I’m bias on the whole thing, but I feel like it will eventually make its way back and that the lovely Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy will once again be back as Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter.
While chatting with Indie Wire, Mikkelsen spoke Hannibal and his hopes for season 4… if there is ever indeed a season 4.
For now, the big problem is that MGM owns the rights to certain characters from Thomas Harris’ novel. Meaning that the Clarice Starling through line belongs to them. So characters like Buffalo Bill are off limits at the moment. However, that hasn’t stopped Mads and the gang from their wishes for the series’s future.
“That’s always been an issue because they didn’t have the rights for that book. But that’s obviously the most famous part and we’d love to go in there. We would obviously switch it around a little and do all kinds of crazy stuff with it. That story is so interesting and the characters in it are as interesting. We’d switch around the genders and maybe even put two characters into one,”Mikkelsen told Indie Wire.
He went onto say, “We would love to find someone to play Buffalo Bill. That’s going to be tough. We found a Hannibal, so it’s possible. We already used Michael Pitt for Mason and that was fantastic. If he wasn’t playing Mason I’d love to see him as Buffalo Bill.”
Michael Pitt did an amazing job as Mason Verger in Hannibal season 2. Unfortunately, he was replaced in season 3 by Joe Anderson. Pitt is phenomenal in the roles that he does take on. For example, the American remake of Funny Games, Boardwalk Empire and I Origins are all must-sees. So, I would put aside disbelief and go with it if indeed he did get to play Buffalo Bill.
Personally, I would love to see Tom Hiddleston as Bill. I mean can you imagine? I think he would be beyond perfect.
At the moment NBC is working on a series titled Starling that will see a prequel to Clarice Starling. This is going to be a tale prior to her meeting with Hannibal of course.
As for Hannibal, we can always keep the faith. It seems that Mikkelsen, Fuller and Dancy are constantly keeping that faith.
