Bats Soon to Grace the Back of U.S. Quarters

Count Dracula is sure to be a fan of the U.S. Mint’s move to place bats on the back of U.S. quarters. Of course, these aren’t vampire bats, but are still in the horror realm enough to mention here.

These fruit bat themed coins are the first special edition coins of 2020. They feature a mother and her cub. They are being made to call attention to the species’s threatened numbers.

“The image evokes the remarkable care and energy that this species puts into their offspring, the design is intended to promote awareness to the species’ threatened status due to habitat loss and commercial hunting. The National Park of American Samoa is the only park in the United States that is home to the Samoan fruit bat.” The U.S. Mint wrote in it’s description.

Bats have always been closely linked to horror primarily for Dracula’s roots but also, for a kinship with shapeshifters in general. This is an adorable species and hopefully with the attention this coin calls to them, it assists in protection of their natural habitat.

You can get your hands on the coin when it releases on Feb. 3.

What do you guys think? Excited about adding a bat quarter to the collection?
