Issa Lopez Set to Write/Direct Adaptation of Matthew Baker’s ‘Lost Souls’

Issa Lopez landed solidly on everyone’s radar with her brilliant film Tigers are not Afraid last year, garnering praise from critics and audiences alike as well as a great deal of attention from master filmmaker Guillermo del Toro.

Naturally, the question became, “What’s next?’ It appears the answer to that question is a film adaptation of Matthew Baker’s Lost Souls.

According to Deadline, Lopez will write and direct the adaptation which was optioned by Searchlight and Noah Hawley (Legion) last year.

Set in a world where some babies are born without souls, Lost Souls focuses on a young woman who is sent to a “wellness center” in the hopes of improving her chances of giving birth to a normal, healthy child.

Lopez is also developing a supernatural folklore film with del Toro at the moment that is only categorized on IMDb as Untitled Werewolf Western (Lopez/del Toro Project). The writer/director first spoke about in an interview with Entertainment Weekly last August.

“So, we’re prepping a werewolf movie, a supernatural Western,” Lopez told the publication. “It’s a werewolf-Western! I’m super excited. He has the script, I wrote it, he loves it, and we’re gearing up to make it.”

iHorror will keep you posted on both of these projects as they develop.
